Representation matters. Representation matters. Representation matters.
Just in case you forgot…. Representation matters.
Now that that’s out the way, it’s time to celebrate because the first ever hijab-wearing Barbie doll just became a thing!
Unveiled at Glamour’s Woman of The Year Live Summit, Barbie’s newest addition was created to honour Olympian Ibtihaj Muhammad.
Muhammad made history last year at the 2016 Rio Olympics by being the first woman to ever compete while wearing a hijab. Her doll is apart of Barbie’s special “shero” line, including other ground breaking women such as Ashley Graham, Gabby Douglas, Misty Copeland, and Ava DuVernay.
Muhammad also made sure to help create a doll that matched her likeness as much as possible. This means the new Barbie is not only sporting an athletic build, but some fierce eyeliner! The magic of this moment is not lost on the medalist, as she commented:
“There has never been a Barbie doll to wear a hijab before. I’m really excited to have this moment happen in my life and also for all these little girls now who can shop for Barbie doll that may look them, may wear a hijab like they do, or like their mom does, or like a friend does.”
Congrats to you Ibtihaj Muhammad!
How do you like Barbie’s new doll?
