If you’ve been tuning into cable television and film lately, you would recognize that black woman are certainly claiming their throne. Not only do they rock our world as actresses, but they are also directors, screenwriters, executive producers, and so much more. 2017 brings us a new name to add to that roster, via a new series picked up by Showtime entitled ‘Chi’ created by actress, producer, and writer Lena Waithe.
You may recognize Waithe from her recent role on Aziz Anzari’s Masters of None, however she has been hard at work behind the scenes writing for Bones, How to Rock, and producing for Dear White People. She’s also directed short film Save Me, and has gone viral on Youtube with her 2011 Shit Black Girls Say video.
Now the young virtuoso has her eyes set on the small screen once again with her new show ‘Chi’. Working alongside Rick Famuyiwa (Dope, The Wood), Lena’s series will focus on characters living in the Southside of Chicago. Jason Mitchell from Straight Outta Compton is casted to have a major role in the hour long program.
Following the hit series Insecure, it seems like the air waves are craving relatable, black television just like we are. We’re always here for another story that leaves us on the edge of our seats, choosing #TeamIssa or #TeamLawrence. Not sure what drama Chi will have in store, but we’re already anticipating the premiere!
