Ancient Greek mythology spoke of enchanting creatures called Sirens that would lure nearby sailors with their spellbinding musical voices. Hopefully, none of you are sailing right now because we’ve found an artist who’s music sounds like a fantasy but is far from imaginary. This muse’s name is Kelela Mizanekristos, but you may call her….Kelela. An Ethiopian-American singer hailing from Washington D.C., Kelela surely lures into the depths of the underground realm, and best believe, you won’t be coming back.
Kelela has received praise from exemplary voices such as Solange and Bjork due to her 2013 debut mixtape Cut 4 Me. After being placed on a publication’s year-end list, she continued to pursue her musical career eventually debuting her EP in 2015, Hallucinogen. Now I’m pretty sure everyone under sun has told you about an artists’ “new sound” only to find out that it’s maybe…not so new? Well, fear not, Kelela has spent years on developing a mesh of grimy underground London house, R&B, electro, hip-hop, with a chocolate drop dubstep and neo-soul.
Her songs Bank Head and Send Me Out resonate with the entrancing mixes of techno and net-soul. Along with her voice and almost visual lyrics, each record sounds as if someone emptied out your living room and just started recording there. There is no escaping the production and enticing harmonies, with a bass that knocks back into your 90’s starter jacket. All my ATLiens may even appreciate her song Rewind, a retro sound that makes you decide between vibing out and blowing up. If you’ve ever wanted to get lost within music, here is your chance. Just..don’t drive and Kelela…like I said, listen with discretion.
(P.S. Did I mention, she’s also quite the producer and known for her remixes of HERSELF!)
Kelela put out a deluxe version of her Cut 4 Me mixtape in April of 2015, the same year of her debut EP Hallucinogens. As of 2016 she has been working on her debut studio album as well as being a part of major projects. Kelela is featured on many hits such as A Breath Away by Clams Casino, and collaborated with Solange on her recent album, A Seat at the Table, by featuring on the song Scales. This goes to show, there is no escaping Kelela. Soon, she will be everywhere. Stay on the lookout.
