So let me begin this post by making a disclaimer:
I am a fervent fan of Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter. I have all five albums, I own a Beyoncé poster and crewneck, will stop everything I am doing if she performs live on tv, and am pretty much obsessed with The Queen on a regular basis. The following post is therefore heavily biased:
Okay now that that’s out the way….
So the Internet world is a buzz with Beyoncé’s youtube docu-mini movie entitled “Yours and Mine,” released in celebration of the one year anniversary of her fifth studio album BEYONCÉ. Upon release I myself, as a greedy music consumer, thought it was more music but no…. The Queen has shocked us once again. Beyoncé gave a part of herself to the world, which hasn’t even been given in much of her music. She gave a priceless vulnerability that was almost chilling to hear.
Us rowdy fans rarely stop to imagine Beyoncé as the human, the wife, the mother, the sister, the daughter and so on. We are insatiable for her talent, and often see her as the product and the icon. But hearing her speak about the naked parts of her quieted the beasty fan in me, and opened my ears and eyes to her as simply a person.
Beyoncé has had pain and tribulations. She cries and hurts just like the rest of us, and what’s more important is that she has something to say. Hearing her talk about her love, fame, and her childhood was all very grounding and made me respect her even more. She told us what she stands for, defining herself a feminist and humanist. And even more…. she was inspiring.
Here are just a few of my favorite quotes from the film:
“My mother always taught me to be strong and to never be a victim. Never make excuses… never expect anyone else to provide for me things I know I can provide for myself.”
“You need something real in order for any of this stuff to matter. You have to have something that is forever… something that’s invisible.”
“When you find the person that you trust and you love and you feel is going to respect you and take all the sh*t you have and turn it around and bring out the best in you… they feed you… it is the most powerful thing you can ever feel in your life.”
There aren’t many artist out there who can expose themselves this way (or have the audience that will allow them to do so) So, kudos to you Queen! Yours and Mine was absolutely beautiful *applause and fireworks* The link is below!
